Artists Collective

Founded in 1970 in North Hartford by renowned saxophonist, educator, composer Jackie McLean and his wife Dollie McLean, the Artists Collective has a rich history of arts training and presentation that is dedicated to the preservation and perpetuation of the art and culture of the African Diaspora. Artists Collective has been honored at the White house for its work with children. Over 1,000 children and adults study music, dance, drama and visual arts in the 40,000-square-foot cultural center on Albany Avenue. Asylum Hill Congregational Church (814 Asylum Ave, Hartford)
Blessing Hartford by "making a joyful noise unto the Lord" for 37 years, the Asylum Hill Concert Series has something for all music lovers. Under the skillful and imaginative leadership of Steve Mitchell, Minister of the Arts, Asylum Hill has one of the most highly respected arts and music programs of any church in the region. Their annual community concert series presents local, national and international artists in their historic sanctuary (built in 1865). The Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts

As Connecticut’s premier presenter of the performing arts, The Bushnell has delighted and inspired audiences for 75 years. With an annual roster of more than 500 events and an annual audience of more than 600,000, The Bushnell presents major Broadway tours, symphony orchestras, family presentations, travel films and children’s theater, as well as off-Broadway, jazz, blues, cabaret and comedy performances, concerts and world music events. Cheney Hall

Cheney Hall, Connecticut's oldest operating theater, was built in 1867 by the Cheney Brothers Company. Restored and re-dedicated in 1991, Cheney Hall has been presenting Jazz programming since 1994. The Milltown Jazz Series features six to eight annual performances by the nation's finest artists. Recent acts include Nicholas Payton, Chick Corea, Kenny Garrett, Brad Mehldau, Kevin Mahogany, David "Fathead" Newman, Christian McBride, and Joey DeFrancesco. The Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz

The Hartt School of the University of Hartford’s Jazz Studies major, founded by American jazz saxophone great Jackie McLean, is one of the nation's top programs in jazz studies. Under the tutelage of Hartt's jazz faculty, who are also active performers, students are given the opportunity to perform throughout their undergraduate program.

The program focuses on the jazz and African-American idioms, and includes special courses on improvisation, music history, jazz transcriptions, and arranging. Students interact with internationally recognized jazz musicians in special workshops and master classes. Visiting master instructors include Eddie Henderson, Randy Johnston and Hartt alumnus Jimmy Green. Students find additional inspiration in the unique cultural relationship the school has with Hartford's community-based "Artists Collective," an organization dedicated to the promotion of African and Caribbean art forms.

Recent masterclasses have featured such world-renowned jazz artists as Christian McBride, Larry Willis, Rene McLean, Eddie Henderson, Harold Mabern, Wynton Marsalis, Dena DeRose, Jimmy Greene, Tony Reedus, Don Sickler, Cedar Walton, Curtis Fuller, Cecil Payne, Slide Hampton, Benny Greene, John Lee, Abraham Burton, Eric McPherson, Eric Alexander, Jim Rotondi, David Hazeltine and Joe Farnsworth.
